Final year of the Disability Royal Commission
The Royal Commission into Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation of People with Disability (Disability Royal Commission) is continuing this year, with the Final Report to be delivered by the Governor-General by 29 September 2023.
This year there are estimated to be 14 public hearings on a range of topics, the first one already held was about people with disability and their experiences of employment services.
As at 24 January 2022, the Disability Royal Commission had received 3,552 submissions, 11,757 phone enquiries and held 811 private sessions. The information shared through these means is essential to work of the Disability Royal Commission and informing the Final Report’s recommendations.
There are two ways you can share your story, by:
- Registering for a private session before 30 June 2022 – which involves meeting with a Royal Commissioner in a confidential setting.
- Sending in a submission to be received by 31 December 2022 – which can be by any means you like, including by email, video or artwork.

The Australian Government has provided counselling, legal and advocacy services for those feeling affected by the Disability Royal Commission, also available as an Easy Read fact sheet by the Department of Social Sciences. You can also find information and support on making a submission.
Some may be concerned about the legal aspects of making a submission, a Disability Royal Commission Legal Service has been established to offer advice and support.
